Burnt out car @ the claypans, Alice Springs

Footy practice, Canteen Creek oval

Two weeks roadtrippin’ in the desert - Alice Springs to Lake Eyre and back again.

Me and my man, four mates, a 1993 Holden Rodeo and a fancy shmancy Patrol hire car set off for Lake Eyre, which is full(ish) with water. We slept in swags under the stars; cooked on campfires; showered irregularly; devoured a vast amount of cheeses (and beers) and managed to fit in:

A night on the Hugh River

Swims at Ellery Creek Big Hole and Ormiston Gorge

Camping next to the Finke River (the oldest river system in the world)

Climbing Mt Sonder, by far the most difficult hike I’ve ever done (which is not saying much - but it was hurty!)

Plunging tired muscles into the freezing Redbank Gorge

Walking the rim of King’s Canyon and swimming in the remarkable Garden of Eden

Walking around Uluru and watching its colours change as the sun set

Walking the Valley of the Winds at Kata-Tjuta

Roadhousing it up at Kulgera

Sleeping underground in the strange, strange town that is Coober Pedy (if I never have to return to Coober Pedy I will be a happy girl)

Camping on the edge of desolate Lake Eyre and wading in its salty, dead fishy waters

Polishing off a couple of brews at the Transcontinental Hotel in Oodnadatta

Then tired and in need of a rest from driving, we set up camp at a sweet little campsite at Redbank Waterhole (south of Alice) for the last four nights.

Then home to the Best. Shower. Ever.

The greenest desert you ever did see. And, donkeys!

Just outside Utju Community (Areyonga), 8 March 2011

The desert is green

It’s a bright blue evening under our clothesline…

Emu!
